Kate Middleton Just Broke Her Own Style Streak at the Royal Ascot Races Today

Kate Middleton must know the number one style rule of the royals: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Case in point: Queen Liz always wearing bright colors, Meghan Markle working it in Givenchy, Camilla Parker Bowles rocking pearl chokers...)

So when the Duchess of Cambridge broke her own style "rule" of summer on Tuesday at day one of the Royal Ascot horse races, we were quite surprised.

Wearing a light-blue and partly sheer Elie Saab frock and wide-brimmed floral hat, Middleton strayed from her recent style streak: wearing white to nearly every official royal engagement of the past four months.

BAFTAs: White! (Alexander McQueen)

State banquet: White! (Alexander McQueen)

Order of the Garter: White! (Catherine Walker)

Addiction Awareness Week Gala: White! (Barbara Casasola)

Beating Retreat: Cream! (But, still, kinda white.)

We totally get it, Katie: White in summer is so timeless. It works for every occasion. Want to feel light and breezy? Wear white! Need to look regal and elegant but also timeless? Wear white! Want to symbolize purity and truth? White it is!

But that's why seeing the duchess today at the Royal Ascot in light blue was hella exciting.

Yep, *this* is now our definition of exciting. Ahh, adulthood.
