Kensington Palace released a statement to social media on Wednesday sharing an update on Kate Middleton's health: The princess is currently hospitalized after undergoing abdominal surgery earlier this week. She is now in recovery following the planned procedure.

"The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in the hospital for ten to fourteen days before returning home to continue her recovery," the post read, before adding that the princess will be taking a sabbatical from her royal duties while she recovers. "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

The statement went on to ask the public for privacy during this time in order to "maintain as much normality for her children as possible."

"Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share," it continued. "The Princess of Wales wishes to apologize to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."

While they did not reveal the reason behind Kate's surgery, People reports that "the issue was non-cancerous." The royal plans to recover from their home in Windsor once she's discharged from the hospital. The outlet also notes that Prince William plans to take a step back, as well, to support his wife and help out with their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The family's most recent public appearance together was on Christmas when they attended the annual procession to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene.
