Kate Middleton has opened up about the experience of giving birth to her oldest child, Prince George, touchingly describing the "pure joy" she saw on Prince William's face.

In her recent interview with host Giovanna Fletcher on the "Happy Mum, Happy Baby" podcast, the Duchess was asked about the first moment she held Prince George, who is now six years old. "It is extraordinary–how can the human body do that?" Middleton reflected of childbirth. "It is utterly extraordinary, actually. [George] was very sweet, and [I was] sort of relieved that he was a happy, healthy boy."

She added that she didn't know in advance whether the baby would be a boy or a girl. "It was a surprise. But also seeing… you know, your husband, William... seeing the pure joy of his face, it was really special."

During the same interview, Middleton admitted that stepping out to introduce Prince George to the public on the steps of the Lindo Wing–in-keeping with royal tradition–was not easy. She described the experience, which Meghan Markle famously opted out of, as "slightly terrifying, slightly terrifying, I’m not going to lie."

But she went on to add that "everyone had been so supportive and both William and I were really conscious that this was something that everyone was excited about... and actually for us to be able to share that joy and appreciation with the public, I felt was really important. But equally it was coupled with a new-born baby, and inexperienced parents, and the uncertainty of what that held, so there were all sorts of mixed emotions."
