This Kate Middleton-Approved Fall Fashion Trend Is So Chic

It’s no secret that pretty much everything Kate Middleton wears goes on to sell out at record speeds. (We see you, Zara dress, Eugenia Kim hat and basically everything from her tour of India.) So it was hardly surprising when we spotted so many showgoers at London Fashion Week sporting one of KMiddy’s favorite fall fashion styles: the skirt suit.

Here are seven ways to wear one like fashion royalty.

Skip the Pencil Skirt

A blazer and hip-hugging skit, especially in a solid dark color, can look a little too Working Girl. A flouncy skirt is much more fun. Pair with tights and over-the-knee boots to really get that Kate Middleton vibe.

Try a Trendy Print

Metallic or embellished fabrics like brocade instantly appear fancier than plain cottons or wools and make a simple blazer and skirt feel surprisingly elevated.

Go Classic, With a Twist

Here’s how to prevent looking like you’re stuck in the ’80s. Avoid shoulder pads like hell, keep the skirt high-waisted and short in length and be sure to wear it with other casual trendy styles, like a pendant necklace, PVC shoes or a statement-making tote.

Get the look: Tibi blazer ($695) and skirt ($375); Lands' End T-shirt ($20); Chelsea 28 bag ($79); ASOS heels ($40)

Look Out for Interesting Detailing

A stark white skirt suit isn’t all too exciting, but oversize black buttons add a touch of intrigue while maintaining an office-appropriate feel.

Get the look: Mural blazer ($75); Ming Wang blouse ($115); Massimo Dutti skirt ($150); Sam Edelman heels ($130)

Shake Up an Old-School Print With Color

Just another plaid skirt suit, right? Not quite. The hot pink accent makes this traditional print feel fresh and new, not to mention playful.

Get the look: Topshop blazer ($110) and skirt ($68); Vince Camuto blouse ($79); Brian Atwood heels ($239)

Mix and Match Your Sets

Not feeling the monochrome style? Take the jacket from one suit and the skirt from another and create your own colorblock moment. Bonus points for introducing a third solid shade with your blouse.

Get the look: Sentimental NY blazer ($98); Halogen top ($32); Staud skirt ($155); Cult Gaia bag ($158); Mansur Gavriel mules ($425)

Or Switch Up Your Prints

One plaid is great, but two is twice as nice. Just be sure to keep one unifying theme—either color, size or type of print.

Get the look: Topshop blazer ($110); Stateside turtleneck ($76); Sea skirt ($445); Nina heels ($89)
