Kate Middleton, Appropriately, Sports Tartan in Scotland

The Duchess of Cambridge knows how to dress on-theme. Today was just one example, as she chose a red and yellow tartan print scarf for her visit to the Scottish Island of Orkney. The Duchess' plaid, however, was not just any old pattern, but rather the Strathearn tartan, a reference to the couple's title in Scotland: the Earl and Countess of Strathearn.

Kate paired her scarf with a full camel-colored ensemble. She chose a double-breasted Massimo Dutti overcoat, wide-leg pants, scoop-neck sweater, and brown, suede pointed toe pumps. The Duchess pinned her hair back in a half ponytail, accessorizing with dainty, dangling earrings and a suede clutch.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the morning officially opening Orkney's new Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall and meeting local National Health Service staff. The couple spoke to the doctors, nurses, and hospital employees about their experiences over the difficult past year.

After the hospital opening, the Cambridges visited the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), the world's only accredited wave and tidal test center for marine renewable energy. There, the pair heard about how the center is helping combat climate change. The new location also coincided with an outfit change for the Duchess. She donned a more casual look, including skinny jeans, a dark green zip-up jacket, brown combat boots, and a floral mask.
