While most notably a movie star, Kate Hudson has made a name for herself in the health and wellness space for decades, from pioneering Fabletics to, most recently, being a co-founder of nutritional powder brand InBloom. The plant-based products are now available at Whole Foods, and to celebrate, we chatted with Hudson through an exclusive email Q & A.

We especially wanted to hear more about the actor and entrepreneur’s day-to-day routines and how she’s able to start her busy days on the right foot. When asked about her ideal morning, Hudson surprised us by sharing her incredibly grounding daily rituals.

“When I’m home my morning routine is simple,” Hudson tells EatingWell. “I wake around 6 a.m. and do some sort of meditation practice while I drink warm water with lemon. I also try not to look at my phone during this time.”

Meditation is a mindful and free way to decrease stress and improve your focus. Because it's a stress-reducing practice, it can also lower your blood pressure.

We also love Hudson’s choice of drink being a combination of two ingredients you probably already have on hand. Warm lemon water is a hydrating choice to start the day, and water paired with lemon's vitamin C content is great for your skin health and immune health. Drinking any warm beverage, including coffee, tea or plain warm water can help aid healthy digestion, and Hudson’s choice of warm lemon water is another gut-friendly example.

“Then about an hour after I wake up, I'll have coffee or tea and walk outside barefoot and do sun gazing, which is one of my new favorite things to do before my kids wake up,” she explains. Hudson goes on to express why she loves to go outside after dawn and turn toward the sun for her health.

“Sun gazing is a great new thing I do in the morning: it’s beneficial for your circadian rhythm and sets your body up for the day,” she says. Sunlight’s positive benefits for sleep are shown in a 2019 study published in the journal Somnologie, where the research found that exposure to more sunlight during the day can help with sleep duration. What’s more, absorbing sun earlier in the day can help you fall asleep faster in the evening.

Her go-to breakfast is, of course, a protein shake with InBloom protein powder (coming soon in flavors like chocolate and vanilla). Alongside her own powders and blends, Hudson keeps her kitchen stocked with healthy snacks for her family to eat throughout the day, including fresh fruits and vegetables.

“In my refrigerator, I cut carrots, cucumber, jícama, peppers in mason jars with a little water at the bottom and cut fruit such as mango, pineapple and berries, and when the kids want a snack I tell them to open up the fridge,” she says. “We also love the Siete Grain Free Churro Stripes, Barbara's Original Cheese Puffs and Parmesan crisps.”

As for her nighttime routine, Hudson keeps it simple: “It varies, but I like to get into bed really early and try to read before I go to sleep. It’s hard sometimes because I’m obsessed with home furniture and looking at live auction sites—not to buy anything, but to browse and see what’s out there.” We can completely relate to that!

With the launch of their products in Whole Foods Market, we asked Hudson what’s next in store for InBloom?

“It's the beginning of the expansion of the brand and I can’t wait to reach more people because we will be in Whole Foods Market and more accessible to our consumer,” Hudson says, emphasizing that it “feels really good” to be able to take a step toward the brand’s mission of “making wellness more accessible.”

“In the future, everything that we’re going to formulate will be set at the same standard as everything we’ve done to-date, which will always be the highest quality,” she continues. “I'd like to innovate and start looking into the things that people aren’t really knowledgeable about that would be beneficial to their routines. I also want to be specific, I don’t want to create a ton of products for the sake of creating more products. I want to be very purposeful on how we build out our portfolio.”
