Eighteen years since Kate Hudson’s breakthrough role in Almost Famous, the 38-year-old member of Hollywood royalty (she’s Goldie Hawn’s daughter) has many more strings to her bow than just acting.  In 2013 she launched the affordable activewear brand Fabletics to huge success – its parent company, TechStyle, is now valued at £700m. She has also turned her hand to writing, with two bestselling lifestyle books, Pretty Happy: The Healthy Way to Love Your Body and Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition.

Her latest role? As the new ambassador for premium skincare brand La Mer. ‘The first luxe cream I used was Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream: my mom gave it to me for Christmas one year and I have been hooked ever since,’ she explains. ‘I grew up in the mountains of Colorado, which has a very dry climate.

I learnt from Mom very early on that our skin changes as we get older, and is especially affected by climate, seasons and the stresses of life.’  And if there’s motherly beauty advice we’d trust, it’s that of Goldie Hawn.

Of course, Kate has since picked up plenty of knowledge of her own, and now embraces a holistic approach to looking good. ‘My idea of beauty has definitely changed over the years,’ she says. ‘In my 20s, I didn’t think much about my body or my skin. I kind of just let it take care of itself. But as I got older, I came to understand how important it is to respect my body and take care of it.  ‘If the things I love and enjoy doing are  in balance, then it shows on my skin. Even beautiful make-up can’t mask unhappiness or imbalances – it shows. What works best for me is taking care of my mind and body. ‘Ultimately, real beauty is a reflection of feeling content.’

Kate’s routine

  1. ‘I only wash my face once a day. Any more than that, and you will strip your skin of its natural moisture. I also try to avoid using water, it’s actually really drying.’

  2. ‘Cleanse using  an oil. I love that you can use on dry skin and pat off.’

  3. ‘Using cotton-wool pads,  apply a toner or  micellar water.’

  4. ‘I use a moisturising cream followed  by an anti- oxidant serum.’

  5. ‘I never leave the house without wearing SPF.’
