Tattoo artist Kat Von D's eponymous cosmetics line is arguably one of the best brands to hit the beauty world in the past decade. Not only are the Kat Von D cruelty-free products affordable and incredibly well made, they're also vegan. The decision to boycott all animal testing has been a cornerstone of the brand since its launch in 2008—not to mention, a favorite feature among conscious consumers.

Earlier this year, Von D decided to take her animal rights activism a step further by using her successful brand to raise money for Project Chimps, an organization that helps to rehabilitate chimpanzees that were once used for cosmetics research. On Tuesday, Von D took to Instagram to provide an update on the project, and suffice it to say, she blew the fundraising out of the water—raising a whopping $236,000. In the announcement, the makeup maven thanked those who purchased the limited-edition Project Chimps lipstick, writing, "Not only will this donation help raise awareness to the cruel + unnecessary animal testing industry, but it will help give 300 chimps [who for the last 3 decades have lived an unnatural life in testing labs] rehabilitation, and a safe haven to live out the comfortable life they deserve"

Along with the exciting announcement, Von D took the time to explain animal testing—and why she refuses to participate in it—for consumers who may be unfamiliar with the practice. She argues that there are more humane ways to test cosmetics—and drugs for that matter. It's clear from the lengthy Kat Von D cruelty-free post that animal testing is an issue extremely close to her heart. Fortunately for her and her fans, her brand's success demonstrates that she's not alone in wanting to see the practice banished for good. Moved by Von D's message? You can support the cause by purchasing from beauty brands that refuse to test on animals, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Urban Decay, and, of course, Kat Von D Beauty.
