The 2023 Met Gala is today, and one dearly departed fashion-industry icon continues to fuel controversy after his death: Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld, who was celebrated a designer and creative director for brands like Fendi and Chanel, will be honored at this year's Met Gala in New York City. The dress code for the evening is “in honor of Karl.” As he continued to trend on social media in the days leading up the event, a number of people have shifted the convo to his thoughts on food and his 2004 book, The Karl Lagerfeld Diet.

Women's Wear Daily reports that the diet detailed in the book included three phrases of alternating calorie intakes. The first phase consisted of just 800 to 900 calories a day, the second phase shifted to 1,200 calories, and the third phase had a max of 1,600 calories. According to Harvard University, to not endanger your health "calorie intake should not fall below 1,200 a day in women or 1,500 a day in men."

Co-authored by Dr. Jean-Claude Houdret, The Karl Lagerfeld Diet wasn't met with much pushback when it was released nearly two decades ago, but it's certainly received its fair share of criticism in the past few weeks. In addition to new pushback, Lagerfeld has also been labeled fatphobic, among other things.

Although Lagerfeld had an insane cap on the number of calories he consumed, that didn't keep him from drinking Diet Cokes from sunup to sundown.

“I drink Diet Coke from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed,” he wrote in his book. “I can even drink it in the middle of the night and I can sleep. I don’t drink coffee, I don’t drink tea, I drink nothing else.”

On top of skimping on calories, he also skimped on workouts, but there is one dish Lagerfeld occasionally splurged on.

“The height of luxury is for me to have an extra slice of toast. It’s the most delicious thing in the world,” he shared.
