The home of Karen Gillan defies the modern and sleek interior style you'd naturally associate with Los Angeles and instead presents a wonderfully charming and modest design that has strong references to the actress's home country of Scotland.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star and her husband, Nick Kocher, turned to L.A. and Nashville-based interior design studio Pierce and Ward to transform the 1930s cottage into a personalized and quirky home that embraces traditional design.

'I could never live in a modern space because it would kill my energy,' Gillan previously told AD.

The kitchen, pictured above, echoes the farmhouse decor of the home. Presenting a collectic look with a lived-in feel, the room mixes textures and fabrics to create a layered look, whilst opting for a pared-back color palette of earthy hues.

'We wanted to make it feel cozy, like an old pub in Scotland, but also fresh and with a balance between the feminine and the masculine,' Emily Ward of Pierce and Ward tells Architectural Digest.

Natural wood is a statement part of the cottage kitchen and is central to capturing the feeling of an old pub.

Key features in the room are the diamond pattern-painted kitchen flooring, as well as the addition of wood paneling on the walls that further promote the farmhouse aesthetic.

Other design elements of note are the central wooden island and vintage-inspired blinds that feature tassel detailing and antique-looking pendant light, further completing the room's cottage-core look.

'I love how this space is both beautifully styled and totally lived in,' observes interior designer Kathy Kuo. 'The rustic-chic barstools at the kitchen island immediately invite people to gather and settle in... and the warm lighting compliments the sunny patterned window treatments perfectly.'
