'The Kardashians' Trailer Shows Kourtney and Travis Trying for a Baby

We never could have expected the Kardashians to keep away from reality TV for long; the very idea of their E! staple, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, ending after 20 seasons felt nonsensical. The stakes have never been so high! Kim is divorced, Kourtney's engaged, Kylie just had a baby, Kendall kissed her boyfriend in public, and, well, keep your eyes on the tabloids over the next few weeks, as more gossip is always forthcoming.
That's because, if the Kardashians are good at any one thing, it's maintaining their meticulously groomed empire within an ever-shifting media landscape. Which explains why the family is shuttling their drama over to Hulu, as part of a multi-year deal to “create global content”—whatever that means—exclusively for the Disney-owned streaming service. The new series will likely borrow heaps of inspiration from KUWTK's fourth-wall-breaking structure and peek-behind-the-curtains voyeurism, but with a bit of added Hulu prestige. As the debut date rapidly approaches, here's what we know so far—and what we can only speculate.
When will the new series arrive?
The end of KUWTK was announced in September 2020, and soon after Khloé Kardashian hinted the new Hulu show would drop in early 2022. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she told the host the show would likely premiere “soon.”
“I think in a few months, either end of January, early February,” she said. “That's the beauty of Hulu, we're streaming, and we get to have a much quicker turn around than previously. We're really excited.”
In October 2021, Variety revealed that the show was in production, pushed along by the film operation team at Fulwell 73, known for its work on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Friends: The Reunion, and Adele: One Night Only. As part of the collaboration, Fulwell 73 partner Ben Winston will executive produce alongside Emma Conway, Elizabeth Jones and showrunner Danielle King.
On New Year's Eve 2021, Hulu dropped a teaser trailer for the new show, a series of clips of the women getting glammed up and strutting about in dangerously high heels. In February 2022, Hulu released another clip announcing that “all the walls will be shattered” in the new series, set to release April 14, with episodes dropping every Thursday after.
Finally, a full trailer dropped during The Bachelor on February 21, depicting the family celebrating together in the wake of Kourtney and Travis Barker's engagement. “This makes me so happy,” Kris tells the couple as they clink champagne glasses. In response, Kim gets a self-deprecating jab in: “She's never had a reaction like that for me, and it's happened a few times.” Watch the full clip below.
Another trailer arrived on March 14, teasing much more of the drama. Kourtney and fiancé Travis Barker are trying for a baby; Khloé is working through her “complicated” relationship with Tristan Thompson, father of her daughter True; Kylie is dealing with a “very public” pregnancy; Kendall is also grappling with fame (“I feel like I'm being chased,” she says in the car); and Kim touches on her new relationship with Pete Davidson and her divorce from Kanye West. (“He told me my career is over,” she tells Kourtney of her estranged husband in one scene.)
At the end of the preview, matriarch Kris Jenner leaves us with an important reminder: “Never go against the family.”
Is there a title?
Hulu has kept things simple and named their series The Kardashians, and the show's format seems to mirror KUWTK. In an October interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kim revealed the family would retain editing rights over the new show, and that the series would focus more deliberately on the family's business enterprises rather than solely family drama. “I think it will be a different side,” she told the paper. “But I wouldn’t say that our silly sides are not going to come out.”
Kris has also hinted at the Hulu show diverging, at least slightly, from the soapy spats of the past. “This is the next chapter,” Kris told an audience during the May 2021 Disney Upfronts. “In the new show, you’ll see us evolving as a family, fans want us to be who we are and since moment one, they’ve been emotionally invested in our show just like we are. The fans will love seeing us continue the journey. I can’t say much about what’s coming but spoiler, we’re going to look fabulous and everyone’s going to watch.”
How will the series look different from KUWTK?
By the looks of it, not much will change between KUWTK and The Kardashians, though Variety reports a couple minor shifts: The show “feels like a premium version” and is “presented more documentary style.” Hulu plans to launch two seasons for 40 episodes total, though the Kardashians also have an option for future projects with Disney.
As for why the family made the switch to Hulu in the first place, Jenner kept her answer succinct, telling Variety, “Well, money always matters. I think that anybody would be foolish to say that money doesn’t matter anymore.”
Added Khloé, each family member will receive an equal payment, which played a factor in the move to the Disney-owned streamer. “We always have our private family conversations, and we’re pretty brutal, me and my sisters, with what we will settle for or not settle for,” she said. “But not all money is good money. It has to be a good fit, and Hulu was just the perfect fit for us.”
As for whether they considered an alternative streaming service, Jenner said, “We had options for sure, but I’m not one to kiss and tell.”
Will the whole family be involved?
Most of the Kardashian regulars, including Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Kris Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian West, and Khloé Kardashian, are attached to the project. Neither Robert Kardashian nor Caitlyn Jenner will appear in the series, Variety reports. But at least one other KUWTK staple seems poised to stick around: Scott Disick, Kourtney's one-time fiancé.
“But @ScottDisick is coming with us to Hulu sooooooo I get it BUT he will be back!!!!” Kim posted on Instagram, following a fan's concern over KUWTK's end.
Barker, Kourtney's fiancé, will also appear on the show. “I honestly haven't talked to them about it, but I'm assuming because he's such a big part of Kourtney's life that hopefully they will be on,” Kim told The Ellen Degeneres Show in September 2021. “I love their relationship. They've grown so much together.”
According to Us Weekly, Disick was only willing to participate in the new series if he “got paid a lot,” and his relationship with his ex continues to be strained in the wake of her engagement to Barker. The ensuing drama will almost certainly become a storyline in the new series. “The Kardashians adore Scott and tell him he’s part of the family no matter what, but he feels very distant and feels like an outcast more than ever,” a source told Us. “He avoids family get-togethers that Travis is at, and he has refused to be in the same room with him at times.”
On Kim's end of things, Variety reports the series will follow her dramatic divorce from West and ensuing relationship with comedian Pete Davidson, though Davidson himself will not make an appearance. “I have not filmed with him,” Kim revealed to Variety. “And I’m not opposed to it. It’s just not what he does...But if there was an event happening and he was there, he wouldn’t tell the cameras to get away. I think I might film something really exciting coming, but it wouldn’t be for this season.”
However, viewers can expect to learn more about how the romance played out off-screen. The Kardashians will address “how we met and who reached out to who and how it happened and all the details that everyone wants to know,” Kim teased.
West will also make an appearance in the first episode, Variety reported, though Kim stressed that the series would handle the divorce respectfully. “Being in the public eye and having disagreements publicly is never easy,” she said. “But I do believe in handling it all privately. I believe in championing publicly and criticizing privately. I don’t think I would ever criticize the father of my children on my TV show. That’s just not really what I’m about, and I just don’t think that would ever make me feel good.”
