Sit tight, Karate Kid fans. Your favorite dojo is returning to the big screen.

Sony Pictures recently announced that a new Karate Kid film is in the works, describing it as "the return of the original Karate Kid franchise." The movie's release date is set for June 7, 2024.

Right about now, all the Cobra Kai fans out there are probably wondering if there is any connection between the hit Netflix series and the new film. While the Karate Kid storyline has lived on thanks to the Netflix original (which just debuted its fifth season), the new film will be the first in the franchise since The Next Karate Kid in 1994. (There was also a 2010 remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.)

Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz confirmed on Twitter that the new Karate Kid film is not related to the Netflix series.

"The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday," Hurwitz said. "But this one isn't from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don't know much about it, but wish it well. #KarateKid #CobraKai"

The upcoming Karate Kid movie does not have an official description from the studio, nor is there a confirmed cast. ThePioneerWoman.com will update this article as more information comes out before the films release date on June 7, 2024.
