• Danny McBride revealed that he spent a day on a boat in South Carolina with Kanye West.
• Kanye wants McBride to play him in a movie about his life.
• McBride's new show,
The Righteous Gemstones, debuts August 18 on HBO.

With all the success last year for Bohemian Rhapsody, the Queen biopic, and earlier this summer for Rocketman, the Elton John-centered film, it's probably safe to say we'll be getting more movies about true music stories in the future; I mean, Rami Malek won the Oscar, for pete's sake.

So, the idea that eventually we'll get a biopic about Kanye West—both a musical genius and a human slot machine—isn't the craziest thing in the world. And Kanye's got quite the story.

But let's be clear: it's Kanye. And because it's Kanye, as always, there's a wrinkle. And that wrinkle is that he wants to make a movie himself, based on his own life—and he wants Danny McBride to play him.

OK. Now that we've established that, we can move on.

McBride was promoting his new HBO series The Righteous Gemstones on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, when he started talking about how he moved to South Carolina, and some people who've come to visit him in his new state of residence.

As he described, one day, out of the blue, he got a call from Kanye (He has no idea how the rapper got his number: "Kanye has his ways, I guess.") He apparently told McBride that he was a fan, and wanted to hang out, thinking he lived in Los Angeles—but McBride said he lived in Charleston, and Yeezy made the trip out anyway.

On their phone call, McBride says that Kanye shared a project idea that intrigued the Pineapple Express star: "He wanted to do a movie about the story of his life, and he wanted me to play him."

This idea was intriguing enough for McBride, who knows a thing or two about celebrities with giant egos, after playing the hyperbolically-lewd Kenny Powers for four seasons on HBO's hilarious Eastbound and Down.

McBride said that after a full day of hanging out in South Carolina and talking about the movie, Kanye returned to his home, looking at both of them. "Papa, do you think Kanye West wants to watch me play Fortnite?" McBride said his son asked.

At a crossroads, McBride passed the question along to Kanye. "Yeah," he said. "And then we just sat there and watched my son play Fortnite," McBride said. "And then he flew home and disappeared."

"So when is this happening?" Kimmel asked.

"Well, maybe if Gemstones doesn't go well, maybe next..." McBride said, with a laugh.

As much as we'd be down to see McBride play the off-the-walls rapper, we're also hoping that The Righteous Gemstones does well. It's got a great cast, bringing McBride, Adam Devine, and John Goodman together for a plot that involves televangelists, blackmail, and some truly radical outfits. So in.

But we'd also be so in on McBride playing Kanye in a movie. Really, it's a win-win.
