Kansas City plant shops give tips for National Gardening Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sunday was National Gardening Day and the weather in Kansas City sure made for a good day to work in the yard.

At Waldo Greenhouse, Cara Mullen told FOX4 that people have been really anxious to get out there and plant and that the store had been busy for most of the day.

At rOOTS KC, gardening happens inside, not out. “Our classics like pothos, our monsteras, snake plants and zz plants are some of the classic plants people start off with,” store manager Jaeda Hazim said.

She says that starting inside is a great way to get started into gardening and that there are plants that fit every lifestyle. “So, you want to figure out what light you have in your apartment and your watering schedule,” she said. “It’s up to what you want, there’s a perfect fit for everyone.”

Mullen said that it’s not too early to be planting this year.

“You would only need to cover your vegetable plants which you can do with plastic and make sure it’s mulched in,” she said about cooler weather. “A lot of the annuals that go in the shade, I worry about those a little bit. I would not put in a lot of the impatiens and begonias just yet just cause they’re so sensitive. And everything else I think will be just fine.”

We asked both Mullen and Hazim what their best advice for beginner gardeners is.

“You got to consider what has sun and what doesn’t and what plants grow in the sun and what doesn’t. That’s the most important thing. And make sure you have good soil,” Mullen said.

“Get the right information,” Hazim said about plant care. “Because there is a lot of information on google and it all says something different.”
