Kalamazoo Bike Week shifts into gear Saturday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — If you’re driving in the Kalamazoo area over the weekend, you’ll probably see more bicyclists on the road.

That’s because on Saturday, Kalamazoo Bike Week kicks off.

The annual celebration runs from May 11 to May 18 this year. Organizers say the more than 30 events through the week — like a ride-along with the mayor and a bike rodeo — showcase the diverse and vibrant bicycling community in the area.

The first event of the week is the Bronson Park Bicycle Show.

“That’s an opportunity for residents to show off their very cool bikes, kind of like a car show. And you’ll be able to get your bike fixed: Open Roads will be there doing repairs. You can connect with any of the local bike shops,” Bike Week Chair Isaac Green said.

Green said with more people on the road throughout the week, drivers should make sure give enough space to bicyclists and follow all traffic laws.

“Driving in Kalamazoo, there is the 5-foot passing law for cyclists. So if you are in a vehicle, please give cyclist as much space as possible. It is also a state law to give cyclists 3 feet, so keep that in mind,” Green said.

Cyclists participating in Kalamazoo Bike Week are being encouraged to have front and rear lights, helmet, and a way to stay visible to drivers.
