In a Twitch stream on Aug. 9, Kai Cenat called out rioters who ruined his Union Square giveaway. The giveaway event, which took place Aug. 4, was supposed to be a chance for his followers to win free PlayStation consoles and gift cards at Union Square Park. It quickly dissolved into chaos, prompting security and law enforcement to be called in.

Security escorted Cenat away, and police took some rioters into custody. One TikTok even showed what appears to be Cenat comforting a fan during the chaos.

As a result of the rioting, officials charged the 21-year-old Cenat with a first-degree felony and a misdemeanor for inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. He confirmed in the stream that his first court date will be Aug. 16.

However, in his first return to Twitch since the giveaway, Cenat denounced the rioters and expressed disappointment in what transpired.

“I am beyond disappointed in anybody who became disruptive that day. None of that is cool,” he said in a live stream. “None of that was my intention. I had good intentions for this whole thing. I don’t condone any of the things that went on that day.”

Cenat added that he had hoped the event would be a way to “give back” to the community and stressed that he never anticipated rioting, nor does he condone it. He said that he had grown up in New York and had been looking forward to the event, but the riot had not been part of his plan.

“I had straight good intentions and I didn’t think that it was going to be what it was. That s*** is crazy.”

He did take accountability for not anticipating just how out-of-control the event could get and noted that in the future, he would take extra precautions to “hit up the right people” and “make the right calls” to ensure a public event could run seamlessly and safely.

Still, he urged respect from everyone, from the police to his fans.

“We all have to do better as a whole,” he stressed. “From the citizens of New York [to the] city police, everything got to be treated with equal respect, bro.”

“We can’t just be running around and destroying this and that,” he added. “None of that is how I wanted any of this to go. I didn’t think it was gonna be what it was.”

The gamer also assured his fans that he would be staying off live streaming to take care of the legal issues the riot incited, but he would be back.

“I’m gonna have to chill for a bit,” Cenat told his followers. “You’re not gonna be seeing me for a bit, but it ain’t gonna be nothing long. I’ve gotta do what I’ve gotta do.”
