From Same Trailer Different Park to Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves has always been about connection—connection to the Earth, connection to her loved ones, and most importantly connection to her fans. Last night, at an intimate event hosted by American Express, the country singer-songwriter explained the importance of these bonds as she discussed the making of her sixth studio album, Deeper Well, out today.

An hour before Musgraves hit the stage, the room filled with fans in glittering cowboy hats and floral corsets. While they waited, a video played of Musgraves explaining the process of writing the cut “Dinner With Friends” from her new album. Awaiting the guests on their chairs was a special merch bag stuffed with a vinyl copy of Musgraves’s latest release, as well as a Deeper Well-themed candle from the singer’s collaboration with Boy Smells.

It would’ve felt fitting to light the candles right there in Webster Hall, where the stage was covered in an elaborate grassy set courtesy of Theresa Rivera Design. The bursting greenery (whether real or not) certainly breathed life into the venue, and it fit well with the overall theme of Deeper Well.

Ever the naturalist, Musgraves’s new album features song titles like “Heart of the Woods” and “Jade Green,” and for the title track’s music video, Musgraves traveled to the cliffs of Iceland, where she told the audience the wind was so bad she thought she might be blown right off the edge. This anecdote was one of many that Musgraves shared during an hour-long conversation with New York Times culture reporter, Melena Ryzik. For the occasion, the singer sported a geometrically-patterned cowl neck dress with hues of orange and brown and a matching pair of pointy tan heels, which added to the natural vibe of it all.

As a follower of Musgraves for years, it was refreshing to see the artist so relaxed and uninhibited. Not to say that Musgraves has ever been afraid to speak her mind (she recounted a story about how she had to fight a label executive to use the line “Kiss lots of boys / Or kiss lots of girls, if that's something you're into” for her song “Follow Your Arrow”).

However, as tickets to concerts become increasingly more impossible to nab and as we see artists take more time away from social media and the spotlight in general, it was nice to sit right in front of Musgraves and feel truly a part of the conversation.

Throughout her and Ryzik’s conversation, Musgraves covered everything from the mystery of the afterlife to making gravity bongs out of 2-liter bottles of soda. And as it happened, it wasn’t just a conversation between the singer and her moderator. At various points, fans talked to Musgraves from the audience. One attendee even pulled up a photo of Musgraves with a chopped lob while the singer told a story of her rebellious teen era.

It’s clear to see why the “High Horse” singer has such a devoted following. She’s always been upfront with her lyrics, and as she explained during the event, she wants her songs to feel conversational—not like haughty poetry that’s impossible to decipher. “Real human relationships inspire me and it’s always like, the joy of...being a human, and that is where my inspiration comes from,” she said. The singer certainly created a joyful night for this fan.
