Kacey Musgraves Literally Dressed Like a Barbie Doll for the Met Gala 2019

Leave it to Kacey Musgraves to understand the assignment.

The Grammy winner never disappoints on the red carpet, so of course the Met Gala 2019 was no exception. And with "Camp: Notes On Fashion" as the theme? She had it in the bag.

Attendees interpreted "camp" in a number of different ways. Lady Gaga debuted four whole outfits in under 20 minutes. Kris Jenner swapped her signature cut for a blonde bob. For Musgraves, though, the call for "camp" meant turning into Barbie, quite literally—with the hot pink dress, big blonde wig, and hairdryer clutch. She even rolled up to the red carpet in a convertible to match her look. Now that's camp.

She collaborated with Moschino on the apparel and Forevermark Diamonds on the jewels. Erica Cloud, Musgraves' stylist, tells Glamour the look was inspired by all things playful. "Barbie is an iconic doll that reminds us of playing make believe in our youth and that we are all young at heart," she says.

Behold.

Don't overlook the details, either. Cloud says there's a lot to look out for, including: "the oversized zipper pulls, the hairdryer clutch, the fact that it’s a motorcycle jacket dress." It's all meant to be "so tough, but sexy as well."

As for the jewelry, Cloud wanted glam diamonds to complete the look. "Barbie is the ultimate glam girl and nothing says glamour like diamonds," she says. "I wanted to replicate the earrings that the Moschino Met Ball Barbie wears, and Forevermark had the perfect diamond drops! The ring is two pear-shaped diamonds that look like teardrops." Barbie would approve. "

"Dripping in diamonds is very decadent and going high-low with the accessories adds to the camp feel," Cloud says. "It’s choosing the most beautiful diamonds, but also Aldo shoes and a plastic clutch." The blowdryer clutch was the perfect finishing touch—"it looks exactly like the toy accessory and is the perfect contrast to her Forevermark diamonds."

Ahead of the big reveal, Musgraves teased her inspiration on social media. It all started with an Instagram she posted early Monday featuring a pair of tiny, hot pink sunglasses. "MET Monday...!!" she wrote in the caption.

As the day continued, she shared more Barbie-sized teases: tiny hairbrushes, a mini makeup station, little shoes, even a Barbie working out.

My favorite part of the look actually happened before the Met Gala carpet, when Musgraves showed up in a hot pink convertible made for Barbie (or, honestly, Elle Woods from Legally Blonde).

"I felt like I was in a doll factory," she told E! of what it was like getting ready for the event. "It's been really fun." Fun seems like an understatement.
