Justin Bieber’s Rolex Is a Watch Collector’s Dream

In the past couple years, the Rolex Daytona has become one of the most sought-after, beloved, and avidly collected pieces among watch enthusiasts. Daytonas with a “Paul Newman” dial—the ones that, like the actor’s watch, use different style numerals, distinct hash marks, and have a main dial color that doesn’t extend all the way to the outer edge—are true vintage-market superstars. Paul Newman’s actual Rolex currently holds the title for the most expensive wristwatch ever sold at $17.8 million. So if you saw Justin Bieber out and about this week rocking his own gold Daytona, you might have assumed the world-famous musician heard all the hype and decided to follow the massive trend. You’d be wrong! Records show that at the ripe age of 19, a baby-faced Bieber was prescient enough to pick up his Daytona. Acquiring the watch might be the best decision Bieber made in 2013, which was also the year he spent mired in a controversy involving a monkey stranded in Germany. Also this week: Diddy wears an extremely special-edition Patek.
Justin Bieber’s yellow-gold Rolex Dayton
Let’s take a moment to admire Bieber’s full outfit, and bask in the glory of a man in full command of color coordination. The ‘fit starts with white on top (a Supreme hat) and white on bottom (Off-White x Nike sneakers). Sandwiched between the white is full lavender, in the form of a T-shirt and pants (made of corduroy!) from his brand Drew. The Rolex Daytona is like the gold leaf delicately tweezed onto a five-star dish.
Diddy’s Patek Philippe Nautilus
In 1976, Patek Philippe released its game-changing take on the sports watch, the Nautilus. In 2016, on the watch’s 40th anniversary, the brand released a special edition made completely out of white gold (meaning the case and the bracelet), with diamond hour markers. There were only 1,300 made, and each cost $96,390. Naturally, none of this was good enough for Diddy, who bought the already very-special-edition piece and iced it out.
Chris Pratt’s Cartier Santos
Chris Pratt’s wristwatch is used to accomplishing firsts. This model was the first men’s wristwatch ever, designed after famous Alberto Santos-Dumont (the piece’s namesake) asked Louis Cartier to make him something he could strap to his wrist while flying. Pratt wore his to celebrate the opening of a brand new Jurassic Park-themed ride at Universal Studios, which is not exactly early flight, but is worth celebrating in its own right.
Idris Elba’s Rolex Day-Date
Rolex promotes the Day-Date as one of its most classic models—it’s described as the watch worn by leaders and presidents. The company line must be working, because it’s the watch I’ve probably clocked more than any other while tracking what celebrities put on their wrist. Roger Federer, Federer again, Dwyane Wade, Jay Z, Lonzo Ball, Zion Williamson, Russell Westbrook, Migos’s Offset, LeBron James, and now Idris Elba are all fans of the Day-Date.
Joe Jonas’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The Jonas brothers have a surprisingly excellent collection of watches. A couple of weeks ago, Joe’s brother Nick showed off a very unique Richard Mille. This week, Joe wore a Royal Oak while... buying a Buzz Lightyear toy? You do you, Joe. The RO is the predecessor to Diddy’s Patek Philippe Nautilus as far as purposefully expensive stainless-steel sport watches go. Jonas’s, though, is no ordinary sports watch: his boasts that mark of ultra-complicated horology, the tourbillon. To infinity and beyond!
