Selena Gomez is currently in treatment for her anxiety and depression, with a source telling People earlier this week that Gomez made the decision to get help after having a panic attack during her second hospitalization for a low white blood cell count (a complication that can arise in kidney transplant patients). The incident was the final straw, E! additionally reported, as Gomez had "ongoing emotional issues" she had struggled with leading up to it.

While some may speculate those emotional issues were caused by Gomez's on-off ex Justin Bieber getting married to his girlfriend of 3 months, Hailey Baldwin, in September, that's sincerely not the case, a source tells People. Gomez's breakdown didn't happen because of Baldwin and Bieber, and it isn't right to attribute its cause to any one thing.

Sure, Gomez was affected by seeing them constantly in headlines (making out, getting engaged, getting married, etc.), the source did admit, but there was a lot more happening.

(In mid-September, Us Weekly hinted at the effects Bieber and Baldwin's engagement had on her. A source said it was “a tough pill to swallow” for Gomez, although “it wasn’t enough to break her." Gomez understood their lifestyles were not a good match, the source said.)

“Having Justin’s relationship everywhere isn’t easy, but she’s also been dealing with other stressful situations and being back in the hospital was really difficult and brought back tough memories,” People's source said. “It’s not fair to say this caused it or that caused it because depression and anxiety is so layered."

The source added that Gomez understands overcoming depression will be an ongoing battle but is determined to get better. "She knows it’s something she will be facing for the rest of her life, but she’s committed to tackling her issues head on.”

E! added in a report yesterday that Gomez and Bieber aren't in contact. Its source echoed People's on why Gomez decided to seek treatment for her mental health. The depression "is an ongoing issue," the source said. "It is consistent but she is committed to focusing on her mental and physical health."
