It's official! One of the most anticipated shows of summer 2023, FX's Justified: City Primeval, has a release date and an official teaser. And that's good news for fans, who have eagerly awaited the return of Raylan Givens, the Kentucky-born-and-bred Deputy U.S. Marshal portrayed by Timothy Olyphant in the original Justified series as well as the upcoming reboot. Here's everything you need to know about Justified: City Primeval, including the release date, trailer, and cast.

Premiere date

Mark your calendars for July 18, 2023. FX announced the news to fans on Instagram on May 15, posting "Watch out Motor City, here comes Raylan Givens. FX’s Justified: City Primeval, premieres July 18th. Stream on Hulu."

Fans cheered the news in the comments. "Been waiting for this forever! Excited!!!! Can’t wait! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️," said one. "Binge watching as we speak right now. It's one of my go-tos that I'll rewatch all the time!" said another. (BTW, if you want to catch up on the original before the new limited series begins, here's how to watch Justified seasons 1 through 6.)

Another commenter got straight to the point: "Trailer please!!!!! 🙏🏻," and on that note…

Trailer

FX has released an "official teaser" that sets the context for Justified: City Primeval but resists giving away any spoilers. The 43-second video begins with flashes of the big city of Detroit. Next, a cowboy hat tumbles in the wind along a sidewalk before landing on a crosswalk in front of a city bus. Raylan, now with gray hair, picks up his hat, brushes it off, and places it on his head. He cautiously scans the scene with a concerned look that indicates extreme danger may be near, which is new for the lawman who usually keeps his cool and sense of humor in the most perilous circumstances. Finally, he gathers his composure, courteously tips his hat to the bus driver, and walks on.

So, what does the teaser tell us? For one, Raylan is far from the hollers of Kentucky and his other main stomping ground, Miami. Like the original Justified, the new limited series is based on a story by the late Elmore Leonard. However, the book, City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, originally featured a different lawman who has been replaced with Raylan's character in the on-screen version. So as Raylan chases down the sociopathic Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, in the new series, you might say our hero is literally out of place — a theme we are sure to see play out figuratively in other ways.

FX's description of the series frames Raylan as a "walking anachronism," which the teaser illustrates through his gray hair, his wary look, and his country manners in the big city. We also know that he's navigating being a part-time father to his now-15-year-old daughter, and that can make any parent feel like an anachronism.

Yet, something about the expression on Raylan's face in the teaser tells us there's something more sinister afoot in this series, and that might signal some very bad news for everyone's favorite U.S. marshal: Showrunner Michael Dinner told Entertainment Weekly, "Raylan's made it this far, but will he survive this? He very well might not."

When the original Justified series ended, the story arch was fully wrapped up. That means Olyphant, starring as Raylan Givens, is the only Justified cast member returning for Justified: City Primeval. The character of Raylan's daughter, Willa, will also come back. However, since she was only a young child the last time we saw her in the Justified finale, the teen version of her will be played by a new actress: Vivian Olyphant (20), who in real life is the youngest daughter of Olyphant and his wife Alexis Knief.

Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) takes on the role of the villain Clement Mansell, while Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) will play his unfortunate lawyer, Carolyn Wilder, in this high-stakes showdown. Other cast members include Norbert Leo Butz, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Marin Ireland, Ravi Patel, and Victor Williams.
