The Lion King live-action release has proved to be more than just a classical Disney remake. From Beyoncé’s makeup artist, Sir John, releasing a Lion King cosmetic collection to ASOS’s collection inspired by the 25-year-old film, the movie has made its mark on today’s fashion and beauty space. And Bloomingdale’s is one of the latest fashion companies to elevate Lion King–inspired threads with a new shopping concept inspired by the continent where the fictional film takes place: Africa.
In tandem with the new film, Bloomingdale’s has curated a shop dubbed "Style Kingdom,” featuring animal-printed swimsuits, raffia hats and tote bags, “Hakuna Matata” tees, and more. The shop was guest curated by Florence Kasumba, a German-Ugandan actor who plays the role of Shenzi the hyena in the live-action film (she was the feistiest hyena of them all!). For this special project, Florence was “able to combine [her] love of fashion and film whilst connecting back to [her] African heritage” by curating and intentionally selecting designers for the shop. Her goal was to select items that captured the “spirit of the savanna,” the grassy woodlands, and the beauty of the jungle animals. She did just that.
Among the items featured in Style Kingdom, one designer caught our eye — Fe Noel. For this collection, the Brooklyn-based womenswear designer, who typically references her Grenadian heritage in her clothes, drew inspiration from traditional African prints. Fe’s collections are always culture-driven with a touch of luxe, whether it be printed pants fit for the islands or sleek swimwear. We can see why she was selected for Style Kingdom. She's also had icons like Michelle Obama and Beyoncé wear her threads — what's not to love? Noel tells Teen Vogue, “The [Fe Noel x Bloomingdale's] collection started out huge, with about 25 pieces.” Ultimately, her designs were narrowed down to four pieces, which are sure to turn heads for anyone who steps out in them.
What do we love most about the collection? The updated animal prints and silhouettes! “I knew the movie was live action, but I still opted for an animated print,” Fe said. The print, which is featured on three of the four products including the giraffe-printed skirt, printed wrap dress, and the wrap top, is adorned with jungle animals and plants. The fourth product is the linen off-the-shoulder bow top, which happens to be Fe’s favorite, and ours too. It “reminded me of a crochet bra that some of the Zulu women would wear,” Fe said. The vibrant coral top can be paired with just about anything in your closet.
Flaunt your love for The Lion King and African culture with Fe’s special four-piece collection and all the other products featured in the shop, which are at various price points. Style Kingdom can be found at Carousel, a rotating pop-up driven by cultural themes, at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street store in New York until September 2, and online at bloomingdales.com.
