Hours before the release of the And Just Like That season 2 finale, Max announced the series’ renewal for a third season. Thank God. Thank God? In its second season, the Sex and the City reboot settled with the zeitgeist like a frenemy. We love it. We hate it. We love to hate it. Another season of sweet suffering. Another season of Che.

What Happened in Season 2?

With Carrie

Lady Bradshaw was reunited this season with her long lost love, Aidan Shaw. She decided to sell her iconic apartment, partly because Aidan refused to step inside it, and opted for a larger apartment in Gramercy Park (large enough to hold two lovers plus one of the lovers’ three children).

With Miranda

This was breakup season for Miranda as she continued to navigate her separation and impending divorce from Steve, while also breaking up with Che, whose television pilot flopped, sending them into an existential tail spin. Still, Miranda will Miranda. This season, our “sexually confused alcoholic who’s in the midst of a divorce” snagged a gig at a human rights organization.

With Charlotte

Charlotte returned to the art world this year, determined to be something other than “wife” and “mom,” and equally determined to fit into her Sex and the City era fashions. Before returning to art sales (and selling a painting to Sam Smith), she tried her hand at talent management as Rock’s modeling career took off. She also played DoorDasher, delivering condoms to her daughter Lily in the middle of the bomb cyclone.

What Happened in the Season 2 Finale?

The season 2 finale, “The Last Supper Part Two: Entrée,” saw our Sex and the City cast (old and new) gather in the hallowed halls of Carrie's apartment to say goodbye. The episode opened with the long-awaited cameo call from Kim Cattrall's Samantha. For 70 seconds, we got our girl back, plus a fantastic Fendi bag.

So, what else happened in the episode? Miranda and Che seemingly buried the hatchet, as did Miranda and Steve from the sands of Coney Island. LTW and Herbert mourned the loss of her surprise pregnancy. Professor Nya was elected to the American Law Institute, and likely got laid by a Michelin Chef. Anthony gave up control in the bedroom. Seema fell in love with a Marvel movie director. Carrie’s downstairs neighbor Lisette got the deal of a lifetime on the apartment every girl in New York would kill for.

Most importantly, the finale brought a big fat question mark to the relationship between Carrie and Aidan. After a scary moment with his son, Aidan asks Carrie to wait for him while he tends to his teenage sons. He asks her to wait five years, to be exact. The episode ends with Carrie and Seema on the beaches of Greece, drinking cosmopolitans. All is as it should be.

What Do We Know About Season 3?

In short, almost nothing. Of the series’ renewal, showrunner Michael Patrick King said, "We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors. And Just Like That… Here comes season 3.”

As the SAG-AFTRA and Writers’ Guild strikes rage on, it is unlikely that we will hear any real news on the subject for some time. Still, we can find comfort in knowing it is coming. Someday.

‘And Just Like That’ season 2 is now streaming on Max.
