Just a reminder: Using sunscreen cuts risk of skin cancer

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Sunny days make a lot of us feel good, and one way to keep feeling good in the sunshine is to use sunscreen, dermatologists advised.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, getting a sunburn increases the risk for developing skin cancer.

Putting on a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF before heading out the door can protect against sunburn.

Joshua Helton of Beckley said on Monday, April 29, 2024, that he regularly uses sunscreen.

“I put it on every time I go outside,” said Helton. “My mom was big into tanning and everything. She’s done it her whole life, and she always is on me about getting sunscreen on, because I do burn easy, and because she’s always scared about how getting sunburn can cause skin cancer.”

Dermatologists advise sunscreen is for everybody, regardless of how well they may tan.

AADA reported that creams are best for dry skin and the face, and gels are better for oily complexions and hairy areas. Around the eyes, a stick is best.
