Chances are you’re *very* familiar with the iconic Anne Hathaway (aka Mia Thermopolis aka Andy Sachs aka Fantine, etc.). But just how much do you know about Anne Hathaway’s husband, Adam Shulman? She and her hubs first met back in 2008, not long after her high-profile split from Raffaello Follieri (ugh, remember him??), and together, they share two boys, Jonathan and Jack. And although Anne and Adam tend to keep their romance private, it’s pretty clear from their red carpet appearances that these two are v ~in lurve~.

But in case you didn’t know, Adam is famous in his own right and a man of many talents, and his love story with Anne is seriously dreamy. Here’s everything you should know about Adam Shulman, including what he does for a living and how he and Anne first met.

Adam is an actor

Like Anne, Adam was born and raised in New York City, and also, like Anne, he decided to pursue a career in acting. After high school, Adam attended Brown University, where he majored in theatre. During his time in college, he participated in New York University’s Tisch School summer program.

Following his 2003 graduation from Brown, Adam landed a five-episode stint on the NBC series American Dreams, as well as the role of Deputy Enos Strate in the TV movie The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning. But it seems like he eventually decided to ditch the acting career in favor of other pursuits.

He’s also a producer

Not long after they got married, Adam collaborated with Anne to produce 2014’s Song One, an indie drama film in which Anne also starred. “At first, I was curious how it would go. People always say don’t work with your spouse. But I loved working with him,” Anne later told People. "He’s really good at this, and he’s a wonderful producer. And I feel like I actually learned a lot from him in the process.”

A year later, reports emerged about Adam and Anne’s second collaboration—an alien invasion comedy called The Shower about a baby shower that gets interrupted by a massive meteor shower (????)—but it seems that project sadly never came to fruition.

He designed Anne’s engagement ring

In addition to being an actor and a producer, Adam is also a jewelry designer. While Anne was filming 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, Adam became friends with designer Heidi Nahser Fink, who created jewelry and props for the film, and it was Heidi who first noticed Adam’s talent. “I said, Adam, you should be a jewelry designer!” Heidi later told People. “He just got it. I just couldn’t believe how visual he could be with just words, while I had the pieces.” That friendship then led to the jewelry company James Banks Design, which Heidi and Adam cofounded in 2011.

Adam's first design was a light bulb pendant that he came up with for Anne. As he explained to 1stdibs, “When Annie was on a long shoot in London and I was doing theater work in New York, she told me, 'I don’t feel like I have the lights in my life,’” and so the company’s trademark piece, called the Lightkeeper, was created. “Once people saw Annie wearing it, they wanted to know where to get a Lightkeeper pendant, and with her blessing, James Banks was born in 2011,” he added. “The company was named after my maternal grandfather, who designed jewelry for my grandmother.”

Adam also designed Anne’s 6-carat emerald-cut engagement ring with the help of the diamond jewelry company Kwiat. “He had a very strong vision for what he knew Anne would love,” owner Greg Kwiat told People. We’d say he nailed it:

He met Anne when she was at a low point

In summer 2008, Anne made headlines when her then-boyfriend, Italian real estate developer Raffaello Follieri, was arrested for fraud after misappropriating a MAJOR investment meant to go toward Roman Catholic churches. Not long after, Anne met Adam through a mutual friend at the Palm Springs Film Festival...and despite the bad timing, Anne immediately felt sparks. As she told Harper’s Bazaar UK, “I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life. I also knew that I couldn’t have met him at a worse time.”

Still, she decided to take a chance with him, and just about three years of dating, Adam popped the question (with that gorge ring, ofc) in November 2011. Less than a year after that in September 2012, they tied the knot in Big Sur. “He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably,” Anne later told Elle in reference to Adam. “I think the accepted narrative now is that we, as women, don’t need anybody. But I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me.”

He loves being a father

It’s pretty clear that Adam is an A+ husband, but it seems like he’s just as good at playing the role of dad. He and Anne welcomed their first son, Jonathan Rosebanks, in 2016, followed by his brother Jack in 2019, and after Jonathan’s birth, Adam told People that he enjoys every part of fatherhood—even the dirty work. “Every aspect of it is amazing,” he said, adding that Hathaway continually “amazes” him as a mother.

It looks like you picked a good one, Annie. Here’s hoping these two keep on making each other happy for a long, long time.
