  • Jurassic World star Sam Neill, 75, updated fans on health in a recent Instagram video.

  • The actor revealed to fans that he was diagnosed with stage three cancer last year and has been in remission for eight months.

  • His memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, which he wrote during treatment, is out this week.

Last year, Sam Neill noticed he had swollen glands while doing press interviews for Jurassic World: Dominion. That discovery swiftly led to a stage three cancer diagnosis (specifically, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma), and a year (and many headlines) later, the actor is giving fans a health update.

Although news of his cancer diagnosis might just now be making the rounds, he’s actually already gone through treatment. “I’ve been in remission for eight months,” he said in an Instagram video. “[It] feels really good.”

While in treatment, Neill found himself bored, with little to do, as someone who’s used to going to work every day. So he started reflecting on his life and writing down its stories. Before he knew it, he’d written a book. And the memoir, titled Did I Ever Tell You This? is out this week.

“I’m full of gratitude looking back on this life, and that’s what the book is about,” Neill said on Instagram. In an interview with The Guardian, he elaborated on the writing experience.

“I never had any intention to write a book. But as I went on and kept writing, I realized it was actually sort of giving me a reason to live,” he explained. “And I would go to bed thinking, I’ll write about that tomorrow … that will entertain me. And so it was a lifesaver really, because I couldn’t have gone through that with nothing to do, you know.”

According to the Lymphoma Foundation, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma is a rare, often but not always, aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the white blood cells. It accounts for one to 2% of all non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases in the United States.

In Neill’s video, the 75-year-old added that it “feels really good” to be returning to work, and that his latest project, the Peacock series Apples Never Fall, begins shooting soon. He also urged fans “not to worry too much” about his health “because I’m fine.”

Fans were overjoyed by the news, showering the star with love in the comments section. “So happy about your health and your book 😍,” wrote one fan. “Happy to hear all is well and will be reading your book ASAP!! Congrats,” commented another. “We love you Sam! Glad you are in remission and doing well. Can’t wait to read the book!”

We are so happy to hear of Neill’s remission and can’t wait to see him in his latest series. Did I Ever Tell You This? releases March 21.
