June Taught Me How To Make Fried Rice For The Very First Time (And I Lived To Tell The Tale)

A couple of months ago, June taught my husband and I how to cook one of our favorite things to order: dumplings. The dumplings we made were some of the best I’ve ever tasted which is a testament to how great a teacher June is. If you haven't seen our first lesson, you can check it out here! Surprisingly, we didn't scare her off and she agreed to another lesson. This time she taught me how to make pork fried rice!

Going into my first cooking lesson with June, I was super intimidated. Dumplings seemed like a daunting task for someone who had little-to-no culinary skills, but thanks to June’s patience, my anxiousness quickly turned into eagerness and excitement. This time around I was far more at ease and ready to get down to business.

According to June, fried rice is better when you use leftover rice. Which only could mean one thing for me: I was on my own. I had to cook rice the night before my lesson and SURPRISE, that would be my first time cooking rice—ever. For those of you secretly judging me, I say to you, you have to start somewhere! June was so gracious with me. She sent me step by step instructions for the rice.

I followed each step and my rice came out perfect—I know it may sound crazy, but I felt so accomplished. The next day we had our lesson and like the dumplings, the fried rice was a success. I don’t want to give too much away so check out the full lesson on YouTube.

Although I love learning how to cook, I have to say what I love the most about my lessons with June is that it's a time to reconnect with a new friend. We laugh, we create, we dance and for a short time forget the hardships around us, at the end of the day isn't that what cooking is all about?
