“It’s not true!” exclaimed electropop artist Julie Budet, a.k.a. Yelle, laughing at the widely held belief that French women don’t need to exercise to stay slender. “We have to exercise. Before I went on tour, I spent an entire year working on my body, actually.” As a matter of fact, before each show, Budet and her band try to do one-minute planks on the floor. “It keeps our energies up together,” she says. Now that she’s on tour, Budet doesn’t have time to stop and rest — she will be performing on the main stage at Full Moon Fest on August 1st at the Brooklyn Mirage in New York, and her new remix EP, “Complètement Fou,” is out today.

When Budet began her career in 2005, she wore neon cartoonish ensembles along the same vein as Jeremy Scott’s designs and sang chansons with naughty underlying messages, such as the Myspace hit “Je veux te voir,” which mocks French male rappers that sing about their sexual prowess. She made her debut right before Electric Dance Music became an international phenomenon at Coachella in 2006, and Budet’s concerts were rave dance parties full of fans who may not even understand the all French lyrics in her song. Now, Budet has a much more toned down style and beauty look. “After a few years of live shows, I realized that less makeup is the best,” she tells Yahoo Beauty. “Because I’m sweating a lot, I don’t need a lot of stuff. I just use Garnier BB cream, a black eyeliner from Sephora with a little bit of blue liner, and a lot of Maybelline mascara. And red lipstick, which is always Chanel Rouge Allure in #14.”

While her aesthetic has changed and become more grown up, Budet retains a bit of subversion in her demeanor, acknowledging that being scrutinized about her appearance has made her more conscious of the way she looks, but no less critical of these standards. “We are told that girls must be nice and clean and smile in their pictures, but I think things are changing. I’m shy and I don’t always smile, unless I’m onstage, where my confident side comes out,” she says. “When you go back in reality, people expect that you’re the same person as you are onstage.” Onstage, Budet is an enigmatic dance music icon — but offstage, she is another mysterious French woman with that je ne sais quoi charisma.

Below, Budet shares her summer beauty essentials:

When hitting the beach, I always bring… Sunscreen! I’m using La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 ($40).
The scent I spray on is… Guerlain Vetiver ($72) but just a little bit on my hair.
I usually wear my hair… Super natural, with the salt of the sea.
My toes are painted with... Color Riche from L'Oréal, #859 Gourmandise.
On a night out I sip on… Amaretto Sour
I always have in my summer clutch… MAC Bronzing Powder ($25), mascara from Gemey-Maybelline and a Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum Butter ($4). And of course, Rouge Allure #14 Passion from Chanel ($36).
Warm weather lip color… L'Oréal Colour Riche #144… Ooh, la la!
Spray it on or keep it real? Spray, spray!
Margarita or piña colada? Margarita! It reminds me the days off when we are on tour!
Bikini or one-piece? It totally depends on the mood of the day! The last few days, I was more into a new bikini with a lobster pattern, from French retailer Monoprix!
Beach or pool? Beach! I have the chance to live five minutes away from the ocean in Brittany.
Favorite vacation destination? Formentera, the island south of Ibiza, which is way more calmer than its neighbor.
Bob Marley or Taylor Swift? Taylor Swift! I love her last song, “Bad Blood.”
Bike or Convertible? Bike, I like the feeling of taking care of my body when I ride my bike.
Ice cream or popsicle? Popsicle — way more refreshing!
Sundress or cutoffs? I can’t choose! I like them both and it really depends on the mood of the day.
