The pair have been friends for over 60 years.
Julie Andrews was one proud BFF last night when she attended the taping of Carol Burnett's birthday special, Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.
Per TV Insider, the big event is set to air on NBC on Wednesday, April 26, 2023: the comedy legend's 90th birthday. The two-hour show is described as a "career retrospective," featuring Burnett's friends, colleagues, and fans for a selection of musical performances and tributes.
It's unclear if Andrews, 87, will have a role in the production—she doesn't sing much anymore, ever since her voice was irreparably damaged during a 1997 surgery—but she was spotted arriving at Avalon Hollywood & Bardot, where the filming took place.
The pair posed for plenty of photos together at the start of the evening. Burnett wore a flashy pink blazer with black, white and pink beaded details along the cuffs and collar, while Andrews wore a navy jacket covered in black and white beads and sequins.
Whether she takes the stage or not, it's clear that the Sound of Music star is happy to be there supporting her nearly lifelong friend and colleague. In one photo, she was caught looking proudly over at Burnett as she looked off at another camera.
Kristin Chenoweth was in attendance as well, the trio of Broadway icons pausing for a group shot. Chenoweth wore a one-shouldered gold and silver gown and sandwiched the evening's honoree in between herself and Andrews.
Chenoweth is slated to perform, alongside Bernadette Peters, Billy Porter, Jane Lynch, Katy Perry, and others, with selections from Burnett's impressive catalogue of work, like her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress and her long-running sketch comedy series The Carol Burnett Show.
It's no surprise to see Wicked's first Glinda present; in a previous interview with Parade, she shared that advice from Burnett herself is the best piece that sticks in her mind: "She said, 'Kristin, you snooze, you lose.' In other words, if I just lie in bed, I wouldn’t get to be creative and do what I love to do."
When the event was first announced, Burnett shared in a statement, “I’m so excited NBC decided to throw me a birthday party and invited all of my closest friends. I can’t wait to look back at so many wonderful moments throughout my career. I feel so lucky to share this night with everyone.”
Other guests slated include Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Bob Mackie, Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Sofia Vergara, Steve Carell, Tracee Ellis Ross, and many more.
