Juliana Canfield is undoubtedly one to watch.

The actress, whose first professional role was playing Jess Jordan, Kendall Roy’s assistant on Succession, is making a name for herself beyond the hit HBO show too. In addition to appearing in the FX on Hulu series Y: The Last Man last year, she’s now the second-billed star on David E. Kelley’s latest project, Peacock’s The Calling.

For the most recent episode of In The Know’s pop culture interview series We Should Talk, Canfield opened up about how she’s approaching her career in Hollywood and what roles she decides to go after, what it was like working with so many legends on The Calling, when she knew Succession had become the monster hit that it is today and much more.

On being part of The Calling on Peacock: When I auditioned, obviously David E. Kelley created it, so I knew that [he was involved] right off the bat. I think that Jeff Wilbusch was already attached to play Avi too. Maybe after I sent in my tape was when I had a phone call with David and he was like, “We’re circling Barry Levinson,” and I was like, “OK, what is happening? This is too crazy. Enough is enough!” I was like, “They’re going to want me to do this? They’re going to have to find some little child star whose been famous her whole life to keep up with these pros.” It’s kind of a dream. Karen Robinson is also a total icon. Michael Mosley? Also an icon and such a veteran. The best part about that is you get on set and everyone’s so confident in what they do and so generous with their talent. There’s very little insecurity. Everyone’s like, “I’m great at what I do, and I want to make you look good.” So, it turns into a very convivial environment right off the bat.

On being part of Succession and filming Season 4: I definitely felt it. I don’t know if it happened before the pandemic or during it or a combination, but I remember before the pandemic, if I would be out with a friend from the cast, if it was a major person or one of the family members, they would get stopped. But I knew it was something crazy when people started stopping me, because I was like, “I’m Jess. I’m the assistant, and I don’t have any lines in the first two seasons.”
