Jubilee – live: Queen makes surprise appearance at pageant finale

The Queen has made a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the royal standard was raised above the residence.

Her appearance concludes the Platinum Jubilee pageant, which marks the end of the four-day special weekend.

On Sunday, horses led the the Queen’s Gold State Coach down The Mall as the Platinum Jubilee Pageant gets underway.

A hologram of a young Queen during her 1953 coronation was projected onto the State Coach, but the Queen is not herself in attendance due to ongoing mobility issues.

More than 10,000 performers will take part in four different acts, each of which will help tell the story of the Queen’s historic 70-year reign.

Those taking part include people from the military, volunteers, theatre performers, key workers and 2,500 members of the general public.

The pageant will also feature 150 “national treasures”, including celebrities such as Sir Cliff Richard, Heston Blumenthal, Rosie Jones, Alan Titchmarsh, Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean, and Gary Lineker.

Crowds will be treated to a special performance by Ed Sheeran, who is expected to sing the National Anthem.

The pageant coincides with the Big Jubilee Lunch, with thousands of street parties taking place across the UK.

Ten million people across the UK are expected to join in on local events, BBQs and other community festivites to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Yesterday, Prince Charles paid a moving, personal tribute to the Queen at the Platinum Party at the Palace and thanked her for being there for the nation in good times and bad for 70 years.

The future king was joined by his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and addressed the Queen, who remains head of state at the age of 96 despite her mobility problems, saying: “You pledged to serve your whole life – you continue to deliver.”

Amongst this weekend’s celebrations, the Queen did not attend the Epsom Derby and platinum jubilee thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday, after experiencing “discomfort” following a busy first day of festivities on Thursday.

How the Buckingham Palace balcony became key to royal family’s existence

12:05 , Furvah Shah

From royal weddings, war victory celebrations to Prince Louis covering his ears at the sound of the RAF fly-past, the Buckingham Palace balcony has acted as a precious connection to the royal family.

“This is the monarchy at their most visible,” says Professor Pauline MacLaren from the University of London’s Centre for the Study of Modern Monarchy. “But it is also them at their most strategic. Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasise and maintain their place at the heart of the nation.”

‘Does anybody want one of my ‘stuff the jubilee’ badges?'

Although many are celebrating the jubilee, some - such as The Independent’s managing editor Richard Best - are “gobsmacked by the fact that so many working-class people are still buying into this celebration of an anachronistic institution that, for me, cannot be separated from much of what is shameful about our country’s history”.

The Queen has owned more than 30 Corgis and Dorgis - a cross between a corgi and a dachshund - during her reign, most of which have been descended from her first corgi, Susan, who was gifted to her on her 18th birthday in 1944.

Queen watching the derby in ‘comfy clothes’ at Windsor, Zara Tindall says

Saturday 4 June 2022 16:16 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Queen will be watching Epsom Derby Day at home in “comfy clothes”, her granddaughter Zara Tindall has said.

The monarch did not attend the major sporting event on Saturday, opting to view it on television from Windsor Castle, where she has been sent a souvenir race card to follow the action.

Zara arrived at the sold-out racecourse in Surrey alongside husband, former rugby player Mike, just before 1pm as part of a procession, which included her mother the Princess Royal and husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence and brother Peter Phillips.

She said: “She will be watching on the TV - she has a few runners today dotted around the country, so she knows exactly what’s going on.

“She’ll just be sat on the sofa watching the TV. She’ll be in her comfy clothes.”

Peter was pictured with his girlfriend, who has been named in numerous reports as Lindsay Wallace, despite it being rare for the girlfriend of a member of the royal family to attend a high-profile event.

Crowds cheered and waved union flags as they made their way in to the course, with Anne seen smiling.

She appeared in the royal box while the national anthem was played by a band.

Afterwards, Anne could be seen waving and laughing, while thanking those around her for a warm welcome.

The princess was later given a painting of Dunfermline, the Queen’s winner of The Oaks race in 1977, as a gift to the monarch.

Peter, Zara and Mike could be seen on the balcony of the royal box during the second race of the day, though no celebrations took place after filly Bashkirova claimed victory.
