In case you missed it, Joshua Bassett just released three (3) brand-new songs, all of which appear to be about Olivia Rodrigo. Who, apparently, he hasn’t spoken to since her song “Drivers License,” largely believed to be about their breakup, dropped.

Joshua told GQ that while he’s tried to get in touch, Olivia “hasn’t spoken to me since ‘Drivers License’ came out.” He also said that his record label wanted him to release a response sooner, but at the time, “it sort of felt like a losing battle.…If I try and defend myself in any way, it just felt impossible.” He also noted that “people don’t realize how long ago that was. It’s not as recent as it seems. I’m a completely different person now.”

So why did he end up dropping three songs at once right now? As he put it to GQ, “I’m not here to expose people. It was eating me alive, and I couldn’t keep it in anymore.”

All three of Joshua’s new songs—“Crisis,” “Secret,” and “Set Me Free”—seem to be about Olivia, but the lyrics on “Crisis” are perhaps the most telling.

“And if you get to tell your truth, then so do I / And it’s cool if you want me to play the bad guy / But don’t you dare act like I didn’t love you,” he sings, adding, “Half the shit you’re saying’s only half true / Messing with my life as a career move / I can’t help but wonder why you won’t make it end?”

He also reveals, “My mama called ’cause she heard I got death threats / Oh, what the hell am I supposed to do with that? / I wish that I could open my eyes and the nightmare be over / But you sensationalize, keep fanning the fire for the headlines.”

Olivia hasn’t responded to Josh’s new music, but TBD, I guess!
