A limited series of the Aaron Hernandez story is in the works at FX. Titled American Sports Story, the show aims to focus on an event and/or figure in the sporting world through a present-day lens, told from multiple perspectives.

Season one takes inspiration from Boston Globe and Wondery's Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc podcast. The podcast was released in 2018 and consists of eight episodes from The Boston Globe's Spotlight Team (who inspired the Oscar-winning movie Spotlight) as they look at the crisis in football through Hernandez's story.

Josh Andrés Rivera is set to star as Aaron Hernandez, while Patrick Schwarzenegger joins the cast as Tim Tebow.

Hernandez played three seasons in the NFL as a tight end for the Patriots before he was arrested and convicted for the murder of Odin Lloyd. He died from suicide in April 2017 in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts.

His family requested after his death that his brain be released to Boston University to be studied, where it was diagnosed with stage three chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). It is reported that at least 345 NFL players have been diagnosed with CTE after death. In 2017, Hernandez's fiancée and daughter attempted to sue the Patriots and the NFL, but the suit was dismissed in February 2019.
