Jorja Smith Wears a Bossy Leather Suit by a Young Designer to the Mercury Awards

For the English singer Jorja Smith’s appearance as a judge at the the Mercury Awards in London Thursday night, her stylist Leah Abbott selected a corseted leather jacket and dress from the Warsaw-born designer Patrycja Pagas, a recent graduate of the University of the Arts London.

Jorja Smith is devoted to classic British labels like Burberry—whose fur-trimmed trench coat and matching dress she wore to the house’s runway show earlier this week. But Smith is just as keen on London's emerging talent as she is on her hometown’s heritage brands. She recently posted a preview of Pagas's black corseted, sloping-sleeved leather jacket and mini-skirt on her Instagram.

In an email, Abbott said that Smith was looking for a “more sophisticated ‘boss vibe’” (as befits the judge of a competition) as opposed to her usual, gown-centric red carpet fare. “Patrycja actually reached out to me via email just before our fitting showing her collection,” Abbott says of how she found the bossy set. “I had already pulled a lot of big designers but this was our favorite look by far,” Abbott continues. It’s not hard to see why.
