Jonathan Anderson Imagines His 'Ideal Wardrobe' (and Probably Yours, Too) for A.P.C.

Ever wonder to yourself, "What does Jonathan Anderson want to wear on any given day?" Well, he gives an answer through a collaboration with A.P.C., the latest of the French brand's "interactions".

A.P.C. — which recently sold a majority stake to L Catterton — has been doing these "interactions" since 2019, working with brands and personalities alike, including Kid Cudi, the late Jane Birkin, stylist Suzanne Koller, Sacai, BAPE and Asics. (It even collaborated with itself, in a way, when it introduced an "interaction" with founder Jean Touitou timed to the brand's 35th anniversary.) The 20th installment of this series sees A.P.C. and JW Anderson imagine what a press release described as "an ideal wardrobe that Jonathan Anderson himself would like to wear."

A.P.C. x JW Anderson is centered around two silhouettes: "more fitted and rocker" (think black denim, moto jackets, hand-painted knits) and "more hippie" (looser, more colorful, more lived-in). Like much of the designer's work, it's rooted in wardrobe classics, made a little weird through unconventional colors, cuts or embellishment. It's inspired by German conceptual artist Joseph Beuys' performance, "I Like America and America Likes Me," from 1974, with nods both subtle and overt sprinkled throughout. (The felt blanket Beuys covered himself in comes through the rough wool of a duffle coat; plus, there are graphic elements referencing the ambulance he took from the plane to the René Block Gallery in New York City and its address, 409 West Broadway.) Prices start at $65 for a co-branded mug and $175 for apparel, going up to $2,145 for a leather jacket.

"This project was about learning and the excitement of a new collaboration," Anderson said, in a statement. "It made sense where I'm at in terms of fashion. It felt natural. We have this fascination for reinventing things that don't need to be reinvented, but glorified instead, which I think is more exciting. What A.P.C. is amazing at is it doesn't feel over-egged. It has just the right amount of now."
