This year’s Tour de France keeps getting weirder and weirder when it comes to reasons riders are struggling. Between far too many awkward crashes caused by fans and now, official race vehicles themselves causing issues, it really has been a wild ride.

Today, current leader of the Tour, Jonas Vingegaard, was forced to put a foot down when the car and motorbike in front of him were stopped on an awkward uphill corner on the course.

The tight section of the course came at 8.4 kilometers from the finish, and even before the car forced Vingegaard to stop, fans could already be seen crowding around the race leaders for the day. Eventual winner Felix Gall, along with Simon Yates and Pello Bilbao, were forced to swerve around fans swarming the road.

But the situation was worse for Vingegaard and was stuck not just in a swarm of fans, but behind a motorbike and car. Apparently, the motorbike had stalled on the 17 percent grade, and the car presumably couldn’t make the tight corner with the outside blocked by the bike. Meanwhile, the Tour GC leader was forced to slow to a stop on the incredibly steep gradient and maneuver around a surging mass of fans before finally having space to get started again.

Former pro racer Christian Vande Velde caught much of the incident from the back of another moto during his NBC Sports coverage for the day, and it's worth the two minute watch to hear his take on the steepness of the climb and the tense moment where Vingegaard sneaks by the car with his teammate Wilco Kelderman, who he dropped shortly afterwards.

Vingegaard is now sitting 7:35 ahead of second place in the GC, so it didn't have a huge negative impact on the results for the day. You can watch the moment play out here on NBC Sports.
