Earlier this week, actor Jonah Hill published a post on Instagram asking for people to stop sharing their opinion on his recent weight loss and, regardless of whether the views were positive or negative, shared that they didn't "feel good" either way.
"I know you mean well but I kindly ask that you not comment on my body," the actor wrote on the post, which, at the time of writing, has over 600,000 likes. "Good or bad, I want to politely let you know it’s not helpful and doesn’t feel good. Much respect."
The candid post received over 16,000 comments, with the likes of SZA, Queer Eye's Bobby Berk and Beanie Feldstein showing their support. "Absolutely Love you," wrote SZA. "Thank you!!" Feldstein added: "THATS 👏 MY 👏 BROTHER 👏". Hill, 37, is a regular surfer and started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2018.
Throughout his career, the Wolf of Wall Street and Don't Look Up actor has been body-shamed in the film and comedy industries, commented on by online trolls and scrutinized in mainstream media. "I was an insecure, overweight kid, which in both of those communities is like having a scarlet letter on you. You are a target for abuse" he told GQ in a cover interview.
More recently, tabloid news sites published pictures of Hill surfing in a wetsuit and then drying off without his top on. "I don’t think I ever took my shirt off in a pool until I was in my mid-30s even in front of family and friends. Probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren’t exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviewers," Hill responded.
"So the idea that the media tries to play me by stalking me while surfing and printing photos like this and it can’t phase me anymore is dope. I’m 37 and finally love and accept myself."
"This isn’t a 'good for me' post. And it’s definitely not a 'feel bad for me post," wrote Hill. "It’s for the kids who don’t take their shirt off at the pool. Have fun. You’re wonderful and awesome and perfect. All my love."
Couldn't have put it better ourselves.
