US comedian and writer Jon Stewart arrives for The Albies hosted by the Clooney Foundation at the New York Public Library in New York City on September 28, 2023. The Albies is the Clooney Foundation for Justice's annual event honoring courageous defenders of justice. The event is named in honor of Justice Albie Sachs, who is revered for his heroic commitment to ending apartheid, and will be hosted by Amal and George Clooney, co-founders of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, and Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation. Jon Stewart had to say goodbye to a beloved member of his family this weekend.

The Daily Show host shared the sad news on a recent episode, revealing that his pup, Dipper, a three-legged, brindled pitbull his family adopted over 12 years ago, had passed.

He couldn't stop the tears as he recounted the day they met the dog, sharing that his children, then young, elementary-aged kids, wanted to help raise funds for a local animal shelter that happened to be taking care of Dipper, then one(ish), after he'd lost his right leg to a car.

Stewart choked up as he shared the story, avoiding eye contact with the camera, joking that he "thought [he'd] get further" before the emotion overtook him.

"In a world of good boys, he was the best," the television personality said sweetly, before telling his audience, “Dipper passed away yesterday. He was ready. He was tired. But I wasn’t.”

Dipper "was part of the OG Daily Show dog crew," Stewart shared, noting that he once came to the studio every day, alongside several other show pups. "We'd come and we'd tape the show, and Dipper would wait for me to be done," he remembered.

“And he met actors and authors and presidents and kings. And he did what the Taliban could not do, which is put a scare into Malala Yousafzai,” he joked, sharing a clip of the young activist becoming startled when coming face to face with Dipper backstage.

The family were all able to be together as he passed. “Thank goodness we were all with him,” he said, sending the audience off with a final, tearjerking message: “But boy, my wish for you is one day you find that dog, that one dog that just is the best.”
