The final season of Game of Thrones will only contain six episodes, so fans know each and every one is going to be packed full of drama and revelations. Sunday's season premiere was no different, and it brought one of the most anticipated events.

Last season, Bran Stark discovered that Jon Snow was not, as everyone believed, the bastard son of Ned Stark. That was just a cover story for the true fact of his identity: that he's the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, and had to be protected because King Robert Baratheon was set on vengeance against Rhaegar for allegedly kidnapping Lyanna, his betrothed. In addition to that, Samwell Tarly and Gilly uncovered the fact that Lyanna and Rhaegar were secretly married, making Jon the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne. His real name, by the way, is Aegon Targaryen. This all confirms the longtime R + L = J theory; Rhaegar + Lyanna = Jon.

In the season 8 premiere, Jon finally discovered his true parentage. (Also, that his lady friend Daenerys is actually his aunt, and that he has a legitimate claim to the throne, and that he can ride dragons. That's a lot to take in!) Sam explained it to him after discovering Dany had killed his father and his brother, and after being prompted by Bran: "Your mother was Lyanna Stark. Your father...your real father was Rhaegar Targaryen. You've never ben a bastard, you're Aegon Targaryen, true heir to the Iron Throne."

This news is kind of the key to the whole story-the George R. R. Martin series that the show is based on is called A Song of Ice and Fire; the northern Starks are the "ice," while the dragon-riding Targaryens are "fire."

Twitter erupted with emotions over the revelation. Here are some of the best reactions:
