Jon Snow's Prophecy About the Winterfell Crypts Just Came True on ‘Game of Thrones’

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

If there’s one thing we know for sure about Game of Thrones (besides the fact that Brienne and Jaime should Get. It. On.) it’s that prophecies almost always come true. That’s the whole point, right? The most fun of the entire GoT franchise is figuring out exactly how the prediction will play out.

And one prophecy from the books that we (sorta) saw unfold during episode three of the final season of GoT: One that Jon Snow (or should we say Aegon Targaryen?) had about Winterfell.

Yep, according to a recent Reddit thread that’s been getting tons of traction, the artist formerly known as Jon Snow had a dream (and dreams in GoT are basically prophecies). In one passage from A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin (the first installment in the series A Song of Ice and Fire) posted by user ABeautifulMuddle, it says:

“Last night he had dreamt the Winterfell dream again. He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. In the dark he’d heard the scrape of stone on stone. When he turned he saw the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves, Jon had woken in pitch dark, his heart hammering.”

If you’ll recall, during episode two, the crypts beneath Winterfell were mentioned no less than 77 times. The women and children were going to be in the crypts hiding out from the white walkers…except, as Jon Snow’s dream references, the ACTUAL DEAD were also in the crypts. As in, the dead Stark kings, queens, lords and ladies of history. Ned Stark, Jon Snow’s real mother Lyanna Stark and all the ancestors of the great House of Winterfell have been there for years.

So this dream/prophecy predicted what we feared to be true: That the Stark ancestors will awaken from their crypts in episode three due to the Night King’s arrival and his magical powers to reanimate the dead. But don’t say we didn’t warn you…

During the third episode, after Tyrion and Sansa’s sweet moment behind one of the stone tombs, the crypts did in fact open. The dead Starks were reanimated once the Night King raised his hands up and came tumbling from their tombs to attack the living that were hiding out down below. The craziest part: Jon Snow dreamt of this moment seven seasons ago.

While we were sorta bummed that we didn’t get a glimpse of undead Ned or Lyanna Stark, we don’t think we could’ve handled the Stark ancestors trying to go after Jon, Bran, Sansa, Arya or any of their actual kin. It would’ve been too much.

Tune in to see if more of Jon’s dreams come true this Sunday, May 5, at 9 p.m. on HBO.
