Jon Hamm Reveals Major Movie Role That Got Away

Many people think of Don Draper when they hear the name Jon Hamm, but the actor almost played an equally complex and well-known character in a famous thriller film.
While visiting Watch What Happens Live with fellow Mad Men alum John Slattery, who just directed him in the film Maggie Moore(s), Hamm admitted that he was actually supposed to play Nick Dunne in 2014's Gone Girl, a role that eventually went to Ben Affleck.
A fan called into the show and asked Hamm if he was meant to have the role of Dunne but had to give it up for Mad Men, and he confirmed that it was true.
Hamm said, "I was down to the very end of that. That was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper."
The actor was unable to get out of his Mad Men commitments for the role, continuing to play the character on AMC until the critically-acclaimed show's end in 2015.
Hamm also noted that the character of Dunne is from St. Louis, Missouri, and so is he, and the people working on Gone Girl were excited to have him play the character partially because of that.
As a concession, the actor said, "Poor Ben, a Boston guy, had to wear a Cardinals hat. He was not very happy about it."
While the lead in Gone Girl would've been a great role for Hamm, starring alongside Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne, the actor is still doing great, and Hamm's new film, Maggie Moore(s), just came out on June 16.
