How Jon Bon Jovi Stays Stage-Ready at 62

FORTY YEARS HAVE passed since Jon Bon Jovi and company started gracing stereos and stages all around the globe. Why stop now? Bon Jovi is releasing its 16th album come June, a short month after a four-part documentary, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, is set to air on Hulu April 26th.

A lot has changed since the bands humble beginnings—including how its front man cares for himself, he shared with Men's Health. What once was frequent McDonald's drive-through runs has now been replaced with grapes, blueberries, broccoli, yogurt, hummus, and the occasional cookie and glass of Hampton Water Rosè. "Everything in moderation including moderation," he says.

Now, the rock star is way more carb and gluten-conscious, passing on some of his formerly beloved pastas. Instead of steaks and other fatty proteins, he's sticking with leaner choices, like chicken, fish, and TB-12 protein shakes.

You can find him getting his workout in first thing in the morning with his trainer, five to six times a week. He's smarter about how he trains now: years' worth of injuries (shoulder, calf, plantar fasciitis surgeries, meniscus tears, and more) have forced him to become more conscious about what's good for his body and what's not. After years of trying out different treatment modalities, like cryotherapy, chiropractors, and cortisone shots, he's found that tailoring his workouts to work with his injuries has proved the most beneficial.

In the past, he used to do a lot of heavy weight lifting and running. Now, you'll catch him working more on stretching, pliability, and with resistance bands. He realizes he's not as young as he used to be, but that gives him the motivation to keep in the gym day in and day out. "Everything we do keeps me not only fit but feeling good," he says.

It keeps him doing the activities he loves, too. For him, that's tennis. In fact, he's ready to take it up as a second career: "If I could be on the seniors handicap division of professional tennis... that's my aspiration."
