After axing Batgirl for HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery on Wednesday announced that Todd Phillips' Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will premiere in theaters on October 4, 2024. The release date is exactly five years following the first film's debut, according to Deadline.

The movie, which sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the Joker, will reportedly begin production in December of this year. Per Variety, the sequel will arrive as a musical, with Lady Gaga expected to take on the role of Harley Quinn.

Aside from the movie's interesting French title, which translates to a psychiatric syndrome that involves two or more people sharing the same delusional belief or hallucinations, details on the plot are scarce at this time. Warner Bros. Discovery has not yet revealed the remaining cast members in the forthcoming sequel.

The flagship Joker grossed $335.4 million USD domestically and generated more than $1 billion USD globally, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide. After receiving 11 Oscar nominations, the film took home two trophies and a sequel was put into development.

For the upcoming movie, Phoenix will take home a whopping $20 million USD, which is more than four times as much as he made for the first film.
