Things are looking up for Arthur Fleck, as revealed in this new image from Joker: Folie à Deux. We last saw Fleck in 2019’s Joker, locked up in Arkham State Hospital. He seems to have escaped since then, but he’s forgotten to take an umbrella.

The shot was shared by the film’s director Todd Phillips, who posted it on his Instagram, writing: “Thanks for all the messages. Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories. More to come,” writes Phillips under the post. It’s the first update we’ve got for Joker 2 in six months, with there still being a while to go before the film’s release on 4 October 2024.

Joker: Folie à Deux is a sequel to 2019’s Joker, an origin story for Batman’s arch-rival. It’s separate from the current DC universe featuring Ben Affleck’s Batman, as well as James Gunn's DC Universe, which kickstarts next year with the release of Creature Commandos. Confused? James Gunn clears up the DC timeline here.

And it’ll have to be, too, because stylistically the film is its own thing entirely. It’s part of DC's new Elseworlds brand, which was created solely for projects that exist outside the continuity of the new DC Universe. That’s why Phillips can make big decisions in Joker 2, like introducing full musical numbers, or casting Lady Gaga as Joker's love interest Harley Quinn.

It’ll be a while before any sort of teaser trailer. Until then, Phillips’ Instagram might be our best source of Joker 2 news.
