It's been a year since the beef between JoJo Siwa and Candace Cameron Bure rocked the pop culture sphere to its core and, looking back on how it all played out, the dancer has no regrets.

If you need a refresher, it all started when the Dance Moms alum's TikTok followers picked up on a photo of the Full House star in a rapid-fire video as she flashed a snap of the rudest celebrity she'd ever met.

As Siwa explained then, and elaborated on The Viall Files podcast with Nick Viall now, it was a quick personal experience that shaped her viewpoint. At 10 or 11 years old, she was in attendance at the premiere of Netflix's Fuller House, where she had the opportunity to make the rounds amongst the cast. When she reached Bure and asked for a photo, Siwa says the actress brushed her off, telling her, "not right now," before proceeding to take pictures with other kids.

Bure would later apologize for hurting her feelings, with Siwa adding, "You weren't even mean! And I get it now, as an adult, when you're on the red carpet and everything's happening and you're being pulled in different directions..."

But a lot has happened since the two made amends. As the so-called dust settled, Siwa felt bad about all that had happened. She had second thoughts about having posted the video and agreed with herself that she wouldn't mention Bure on the internet again.

But then, Bure found herself surrounded by controversy all on her own when she emphasized keeping "traditional marriage" at the core of the films she's creating with the Great American Family Channel.

In response, Siwa wrote, "Honestly, I can’t believe after everything that went down just a few months ago, that she would not only create a movie with intention of excluding LGBTQIA+, but then also talk about it in the press. This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people."

Siwa made clear to Viall that she never took issue with the inclusion, or even emphasis, on traditional marriage itself, but rather the intentional exclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.

“It’s fine if you are doing it because it’s just your movie’s storyline...it is what it is." She went on to point out that the movie Elf, for example, doesn't include any specifically gay characters or storylines. "Not everything needs to be gay, essentially," she said, further clarifying, "But when you’re doing it out of spite, to say that, ‘Too much is about LGBTQIA+ right now, you guys suck, and I want to make a movie about traditional marriage and you’re not traditional,’ that got to me a little bit.”

She's come to the conclusion now that they'll never see eye to eye, nor will they ever sway each other's opinions, but still, she wishes Bure "was able to be a little more open, a little more accepting.”

After everything that's happened, Siwa says she's “okay with calling her out in the way that I did.” The LGBTQ+ community is "my people, and I have to stand up for my people.”
