Join MLK celebration events in Carlsbad

Monday, Janu. 15 will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Our community celebrates him each year in many different ways. Carlsbad’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee works hard each year to celebrate the work and memory of King. They have many events planned for a weekend filled with ways you can celebrate this incredible man.

They are holding a membership drive. You can join and help year round for the committee. The dues are $10 for a year. This is just one way you can become involved. Can you sing? If you the answer is yes than become part of the Carlsbad MLK Community Choir. They need all the voices we can get! If you like to sing than they invite you to come and be part of their choir. The first rehearsal will be Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. It will be held at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, which is located on the corner of Lea and Alameda. It is just a few blocks away from the library. The final rehearsal will be Saturday, Jan.13 at 10 a.m. It will be held at First Presbyterian Church located at 308 W. Shaw.

They will be holding the MLK Banquet. It will be Friday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at the Pecos River Village Carousel. Dr. Steven Coleman (LANL) will be the keynote speaker. It is $35 per person or $280 for a table of eight. To purchase a ticket for the event or donate to the scholarship fund visit www.carslbadfoundation.org. All the donations support the MLK Jr. Scholarship effort. If you do not want to purchase a ticket or table but would like to make a charitable donation to the Martin Luther King Fund at the Foundation that can also be done on their website. If you want to donate directly to the Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund endowment you will need to contact the Foundation by phone at 575-887-1131 for assistance, or stop by their office at 114 S Canyon St.

Join them for Church Observance Sunday at Carlsbad First Presbyterian who will be their host church. It will be held Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2:30 p.m. The community Choir will be there other guest churches, and friends from the community will be part of the program. You won’t want to miss it.

Monday, Jan. 15 they will hold their march and park activities. There will be a program, entertainment, and prizes. Breakfast burritos and coffee will be served at the courthouse staging and line-up for march at Eddy County Court House will begin at 10 a.m. They will also announce the winner of the 2024 traveling trophy. There are many ways for you to celebrate the holiday this year. Even after the events are over make sure to stop by the library to learn more about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Learn about Martin Luther King Jr. year round with the library. The library has several collections that focus on the life and work of King. Some of these collections are online so all you need is a library card to access them and will not even need to stop by the library to enjoy.
