  • Johnny Depp has determined which causes will receive the money from his $1 million defamation settlement.

  • The causes range from uplifting sick children and indigenous people to protecting the environment.

  • Other notable actors, like Paul Newman and Marlon Brando, also funded some of the causes.

Discussing Johnny Depp is a dicey proposition these days.

Ever since his highly publicized trials involving allegations of abuse from ex-wife Amber Heard, seemingly every person on the internet has an opinion on the actor. Either you think he's the most egregious case of a Hollywood actor being railroaded by false accusations since Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle or the foulest example of a male celebrity gaming the system to get away with heinous abuse since Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle.

The only thing we can all agree on? The name Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle is fun to write, and more celebrities today should have nicknames in the middle of their stage names. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been going it alone for too long.

Anyway, the fact of the matter is that Depp ultimately received a $1 million settlement from Heard due to their much-discussed defamation trial, and the actor had indicated in the past that he intended to donate all the money from the settlement to charity.

Now, according to CNN, the What's Eating Gilbert Grape star has finally decided which charities will receive pieces of the $1 million pie. The settlement will be divided between five causes—with each being gifted $200,000—and focus on causes that range from uplifting the underprivileged to protecting the environment.

The five charities receiving donations are:

  • The Make-A-Film Foundation, a foundation that "grants film wishes to children with serious or life-threatening medical conditions"

  • The Painted Turtle, an organization founded by actor Paul Newman that provides a camp for children with serious medical concerns

  • Red Feather Development Group, a nonprofit that partners with indigenous communities to provide housing for those in need

  • Tetiaroa Society, a group founded by Marlon Brando which seeks to conserve island and coastal communities

  • Amazonia Fund Alliance, "an alliance of nonprofits and sustainability-driven pioneering companies designed to protect and support innovative preservation in Indigenous communities throughout the Amazon"

Regardless of the murky circumstances that led to the settlement in the first place, it's fair to say that, at the very least, these worthy causes receiving more funding is a positive.
