John Duff - Somebody's Daughter

Directed by Shawn Adeli, “Somebody’s Daughter” is the latest music video from out gay artist and social media personality John Duff. In this particular video, Duff pokes fun at artists who are supposedly “queer-baiting” by turning the tables and doing some “straight-baiting” of his own.

Duff stars in “Somebody’s Daughter” with Nellie Salisbury, who appears to be the object of his desire throughout the video. However, Duff makes it clear throughout the video that he’s a gay man simply pretending to be straight for the sake of baiting audiences into desiring him.

“You see, when you start out gay in the industry, you’re reduced to being a niche artist or comedy act,” Duff explains. “I’ve been told over and over that the themes of my music aren’t ‘for everyone,’ so I wrote a super misogynistic song that now ‘everyone’ can enjoy.”

During a particular interaction with a fellow LGBTQ+ artist, Duff started to wonder about the “respectability of his work” and why he had to contend with those matters. “I felt judged for my overt sexuality,” he said. “‘Audiences want a spiritual connection, not sex.’ I told him that’s code for no one wanting to see you naked.”

He adds, “Honestly, every artist today is gay-baiting and LGBTQ+ media eats it up. Maluma took off his shirt, give it a grid post! As though every freaking gay isn’t posting shirtless pictures every day. It’s exhausting. That’s why I’m going against the grain in my new song and video – I’m straight baiting. Maybe, now, I can be fetishized too.”

We have to stan!
