John Boyega has made no secret of his displeasure with the way the Star Wars sequel series—and the treatment of his character, Finn—turned out. "What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side," he told British GQ back in 2020. "It's not good. I'll say it straight up."

So, it felt like some pieces weren't quite adding up when rumors surfaced earlier this year on a blog called GiantFreakinRobot that Boyega had secretly filmed a cameo for an upcoming project set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—another mega-franchise owned by Disney.

But in Men's Health's new cover story, Boyega denied rumors that he's joining the MCU—somewhat. "That’s not in the vision for me now," he said. “I want to do nuanced things. I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas, because I know it’s real hard to top Iron Man in that universe.”

So...not a total, out-and-out denial. But definitely—for the time being, at least—a "No."

Boyega's connection to the Marvel world was partially fueled by a 2021 appearance on Fresh Air With Terry Gross, when the actor praised the studio's work with the character Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) becoming the new Captain America in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier:

We've got people now watching Falcon And The Winter Soldier, and a lot of people have been commenting about the elevation of Falcon's character - right? - in the series and how they've really done well with bringing him up, which I also agree as well. You know, and we can see there is - that's because you give characters these special moments, you know.

Until Boyega explicitly says, "No, I will not be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe," maybe we shouldn't rule it out just yet.
