Home Alone star Joe Pesci has revealed how a stunt gone wrong while filming the Christmas classic led to him sustaining series burns.

In an interview with People for the 30th anniversary of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (yes, it really has been that long), Pesci revealed he was injured while filming the scene which sees Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister set his character's hat on fire.

"In addition to the expected bumps, bruises, and general pains that you would associate with that particular type of physical humor, I did sustain serious burns to the top of my head during the scene where Harry's hat is set on fire," he said.

However, Pesci (who played burglar Harry Lyme in the first two films) said that he did have a little help when it came to tackling the more physical aspects of filming.

"I was fortunate enough to have professional stuntmen do the real heavy stunts," he explained.

The actor, who won an Academy Award for his work as Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas, added that, despite his injuries, he still enjoyed the funny nature of his scenes.

"It was a nice change of pace to do that particular type of slapstick comedy," he said. "The Home Alone movies were a more physical type of comedy, therefore, a little more demanding."

Following the success of the 1990 original movie Home Alone, the franchise has had multiple sequels, including the 2021 reboot Home Sweet Home Alone, which received mixed from critics.

Starring Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Aisling Bea, and Archie Yates the Disney+ film follows Max Mercer as he is accidentally left behind while his family jets off to Japan for Christmas. Despite Culkin's absence from the film, Kevin's older brother Buzz McCallister (Devin Ratray) does reprise his role as a police officer and ally to Max.

The Home Alone movies are available to stream on Disney+.
